In the past we’ve found this wine to be a bit flat and overwooded, but the ’04 is balanced, fresh and downright lovely. Light vanilla and toast shadings accent bright peach and melon flavors, and the texture is something to behold. Excluding Valdeorras, this is Galician white wine in its most refined state.

Touches of nectarine, apricot and wildflower grace the nose. The plate is equally floral and nice, and the finish is soft and mildly nutty. Where it takes a hit, however, is in the mouthfeel: it seems flat, like an older Alsatian wine or something similar.

Stylish and classy; about as good as you’ll find for a 2003 white from Spain. Lovely fresh fruit and lemon custard aromas start it in the right direction, and the palate of melon, green apple and citrus takes it to the finish line. Gentle, with zest and clarity. It’s 80% Treixadura, with some Malvasia and other things thrown in. Imported by Jorge Ordoñez/Fine Estates from Spain.

A barrel-aged surprise. The nose is round and toasty but not overwooded. The palate is balanced and elegant, with full, round, integrated flavors of dry apple, cream and spice. Has the right texture to be considered elevated and classy; 70% Treixadura with five other white grapes.

Treixadura-based, with Godello, Loureira and tiny portions of Albariño, Torrontes, Caino Blanca and Albilla. The whole, however, is all that counts, and this is simply an excellent white that’s aromatic, dry as a bone, and fresh as spring.

Flowery and fresh, with a bit of talc and creaminess to the bouquet. A little soft in the mouth, but still wet and likable. Flavors of lemon-lime and celery are solid, while the finish is dry and peachy. Treixadura, Godello, Loureira and Albariño comprise the grape blend.

The label says it: fermented in barrel. And one sniff delivers the buttery, toasted character of a Burgundy or California Chardonnay. Underneath the oak, there’s fine acidity and blazing apple fruit, and once it finishes you get a finely baked aftertaste. An interesting, elevated mix of Treixadura, Godello, Loureira and Albariño.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This dry, aromatic white comes from a region in northwestern Spain, north of Portugal and inland from Galicia. Hay and nut aromas open to similar flavors, adorned by bright mineral-lime notes. This blend of 75% Treixadura, 15% Godello, with the remainder a mixture of Albariño, Loureira and Torrontes is balanced and fresh, a bright spring white that will shine with seafood and other lighter dishes, or make a fine apéritif. —M.M.
