Earthy, herbal and deep on the nose, with plum, carob, olive and lemon peel aromas. Tight and natural in the mouth, with body and size supporting chunky but smooth berry flavors that are olive- and herb-driven. Spicy on the finish, with good feel and length.

Here’s a full-force Maipo red that’s ready to run. The black cherry aromas and flavors are dark and chocolaty, while the feel is solid and the finish long and minty warm. Big but not plush; loaded but not opulent. A commendable large-production wine (45,000 cases).

Shocked! That’s hopefully how you’ll feel after taking your first sip of this extraordinary Chilean Syrah. Potent is the nose; equally packed with plum, berry and chocolate is the mouth. And with mouthcoating tannins, extract and just enough core acidity, the finish lasts for minutes on end. One of the best Chilean Syrahs you’ll find, and it’s under $20.

Complete as can be, with smooth, refined aromas of black fruit and tight-grained oak. This is an elevated varietal wine that hits firmly with ripe plum, berry and herb flavors. The mouthfeel is ripe and lush, while the finish sports forward vanilla and more hidden cedar. A definite winner.

It’s not often that we come across Chilean Malbec (Cot) with several years of bottle age, but this offers that and a little more. The nose is pure, with herbal hints and plenty of sauvage character. Roundness and depth give it length on the palate, which is endowed with solid berry flavors and proper savory accents. A wine with personality that’s drinking perfectly right now.

Medicinal and brushy on the nose, with olive, sweet berry notes and jamminess. The palate is weighty and thick, with medicinal, lactic flavors of black fruits mixed with herbs, olive and pepper. Finishes short, creamy and herbal.

It seems that each year at least one noteworthy Chilean producer arrives on the U.S. market, and this year we’re taking notice of Pérez Cruz, a Maipo Valley winery that started in the 2002 vintage and whose wines are made by the talented Alvaro Espinoza. All that said, this flagship blend is compact and jammy, with huge berry flavors and racy tannins. It showcases the winery’s ability to match size with style.

Strong on the bouquet, which opens with a blast of oak, berries and black licorice. The palate features bold plum and cherry, and it is ripe enough to suggest raisins. Finishes smooth, with another shot of anise. Enjoyable, with soft tannins.

Interesting largely because it’s Malbec (or Cot). Aromas of fine herbs and purple flowers are light and elegant; the palate is weightless and smooth, with redfruit flavors and chocolate notes. Finishes soft and creamy; drink now.

The color and mouthfeel is fine. But the aromas and flavors offer more bramble and vegetal characteristics than is ideal. So while it flows nicely, the flavor profile gets stuck on jalapeño, tomato leaf and green tobacco. But mouthfeel is not an issue; it’s a chewy, statuesque sort of red. 1,100 cases made.
