A sweet, raisiny old-vines Garnacha with candied aromas and a fat, chunky body that houses soft, short black fruit and peppery flavors. Tastes like licorice candy on the finish, which brings some heat and burn as well. An interesting Grenache that is sweet but isn’t over the top in terms of ripeness.

Superclean and inviting on the nose, with lemon, melon, apple and stony aromas. The palate has a round, pleasant, chiseled feel and flavors of green fruits including kiwi, honeydew melon and apple. Turns a bit sweet on the finish, but not sugary. Really nice for $15 Spanish Chardonnay.

Floral, lychee aromas lead to a sweet, candied palate that’s held afloat by good acidity. Tastes like lime and mango, although the finish is a bit sugary. A sweet, easygoing style of Gewürztraminer.

Sweet and full of raspberry aromas, foresty scents and sandalwood. Overall it’s a well-made, intriguing Grenache with a fleshy, sturdy body and deep cherry, berry and chocolate flavors. It’s a bit tannic, but that only helps the structure. Finishes nicely, with dry spice and vanilla notes.

Barrel toast is front and center on the creamy, vanilla-laden bouquet. This white Garnacha features good body and balance, but the barrel influence is unavoidable and dominant. Resiny, toasty and showing some apple along the way.

A little more herbal, stalky and tomato-influenced than the riper, fresher 2005, but still an elegant, complex wine that shines a positive light on this little-known region at the base of the Pyrenees. Tobacco, tomato leaf, root beer and bouillon flavors set up an herbal, almost Bordeaux-like finish. Layered and structured to boot. Drink now through 2012.

Somontano is not exactly prime real estate among Spanish wine regions, but Blecua, a four-grape blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon, is one of the best wines the region has to offer. Smoke, licorice, rooty cola and lemony oak aromas mix with flavors of blackberry, coffee, cola and roasted meats. It’s a bit choppy and hard now, but time will help it along. A classy wine to drink from 2011 through 2016.

Waxy on the nose, with buttercup, creamy yellow-fruit scents and white flowers. The palate is wet, racy and a touch like soda, with sweet, candied flavors of peach and melon. Plods along with good enough acidity to support the wine’s core sweetness and candied qualities.

Hailing from a more obscure mountainous region, this Chardonnay-based white blend is a potent brew. The nose offers pointed lime, citrus and cream aromas, which are followed by vanilla-tinged pear and spice flavors. Big boned yet clean, with a piquant finish.

Slightly earthy and herbal, as Somontano reds are prone to be, with a gritty mouthfeel and sweet black fruit flavors that come with proper herbal accents. Tastes roasted and toasty, with pepper and heat on the lusty finish. Balanced and good; drink now through 2013.
