Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
It is entirely conceivable that this blend of the two Cabernets could improve dramatically with time in the bottle. Currently, it’s a very dry, firmly tannic wine, with black currant, mocha, cherry and new oak flavors that have a distinctive edge of sweet herbs, figs and tobacco. Improves considerably with airing in the glass, so decant if you drink it anytime soon.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Made from Cab Sauvignon and Franc, this new wine from Viader is dark and dry, and just too full-bodied for a blush. It’s almost as heavy as a table red, with blackberry and cherry marmalade flavors. Viader’s rosé challenge is to lighten up and not try to make such a serious statement.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This interesting wine is an unusual blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties with nearly half Syrah. It does what Napa does so well, offering a plethora of ripe, delicious cherry, black raspberry, dark chocolate, sweetly smoked oak and peppery spice flavors that are deep and long on the finish. A lovely, accessible wine to drink over the next few years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A decent wine, but a disappointing effort from such a well-respected winery. Coffee and cherry aromas are joined by a hint of green bean, while the mouthfeel is supple but not particularly dense or rich. These are young vines, so perhaps the wine will gain strength in subsequent vintages.

Viader Syrah - 2002

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Shows the luscious fruit and softness of previous vintages, with rich, layered raspberry, cherry, cassis, vanilla, caramelized oak and spice flavors that go on and on into a long finish. The tannins are sturdy from this blend of the two Cabernets, Sauvignon and Franc, which was grown on the lower slopes of Howell Mountain. Yet it’s so sweet and fruity, you can drink it now. Misses some of the complexity of the 2007 vintage, but still very fine and polished.

Viader Bordeaux-style Red Blend - 2008

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This lush wine epitomizes the modern Napa style of soft richness and extreme drinkability when young. Made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, it’s beautiful now for its blackberry, black currant, dark chocolate and cedar flavors. For all its approachability, it should age well for the next six to eight years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is kind of a second wine from Viader. It’s very good, illustrating classic Napa structure and fruit, although it could be a bit more concentrated. Shows blackberry, currant and cedar flavors that finish dry and spicy. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dense and taut in acids and fresh tannins, a young, chewy wine with a good future, to judge from the muscularity. Black cherry, pepper and herbs are framed in plenty of new oak. Immature, but should age well. Try after 2008.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine has delicious flavors of cherries, blackberries and oak, and is complex enough to return to glass after glass. At the same time, it’s overly soft and simple in structure, and will not age.
