This tannic Barolo needs another 10 years to show its stuff. Right now it’s hiding its plum and cherry fruit behind a wall of mouth-drying tannins, and the nose exhibits a bit of funk that also needs time to resolve. Try in 2015.

Riserva La Volta exhibits smoky tones of charcoal, black slate, licorice and dried black currant backed by toasted peanut or roasted chestnut. The toasted element, which seems to have become more prominent with time, is a bit overwhelming and definitely the wine’s defining characteristic.

Here’s a super-modern, piacione (roughly translated from the Italian as “no one can resist it”) wine with deep layers of vanilla, toast, roasted espresso bean, blackberry, balsam notes, smoke, spice and tar. The wine is thick and soft in the mouth and almost ready to drink now (or in five years). The finish is delicious with a long cherry-flavored fade.

Barolo Buon Padre (“good father”) is a wine that walks in delicate steps, rather than in leaps and bounds. This is a good thing, because the slow pace allows you to savor its lingering tones of cherry cola, licorice, jasmine and dried flower. The only distraction is a persistent tea-like aroma that develops into full-on Irish breakfast tea as the wine takes in more oxygen.

This Riserva Barolo offers a unique perspective on the Nebbiolo grape. There’s a ton of natural spice in this expression but it’s not the obvious vanilla and clove. Instead, this wine delivers dried currant, licorice, anise, earth and sweet cherry. It has a round, velvety feel and a soft finish. It’s ready to drink now or could age more.

Barolo Riserva San Pietro reflects the heat of the 2003 vintage with confidence and personality. There’s a good balance between fruit and spice here and mature cherry aromas help elevate the whole thing up a few notches in intensity. The wine is compact and clean with firm, drying tannins.

This plush, food-friendly blend of Dolcetto and Barbera offers foxy notes of fresh grapes and black cherry along a clean, albeit simple, mouthfeel. A good pairing idea is crispy fried chicken.

This is a terrific Barolo with cooling berry nuances backed by fresh menthol and cola-like aromas that give it a lively, buoyant personality. On the palate, it feels crisp and compact and what it lacks in weight, it makes up for in intensity.

Starts off shaky, with burnt matchstick and slightly herbal aromas. Yet it recovers nicely with air, losing the offending scents and developing lovely black cherry and hickory notes. Medium- to full-bodied, it boasts a creamy texture and dry, tea-like tannins on the finish. Drink 2010–2015.

Murky in color, and unfocused on the nose. Aromas of coffee and burnt rubber lead toward a palate of sugar beets and cranberry. Just too sharp, with glaring gaps.
