Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Vidal’s Syrah is a dark, inky wine, with vanilla and toast framing dark fruit. Medium- to full-bodied blackberry and blueberry flavors mesh easily with hints of olive and espresso, while the finish features traces of dusty tannins.

Starts with scents of anise and blackberry, then adds hints of tea and pepper combined with a soft, creamy mouthfeel. A barrel sample of the '04 was more promising, with substantially greater intensity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This sister label to Villa Maria better known for its Hawkes Bay red wines has turned out a plump, medium-weight Sauvignon Blanc. It starts with scents of crushed tomato leaf, then folds in grapefruit and a hint of honey on the palate. Turns more powerfully grassy and herbal on the finish, ending on a slightly bitter note.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
After a lack of international success with Merlot and Cabernet, Syrah is being touted as the next hot red from Hawkes Bay. From a top-notch vintage, this wine offers scents of tar, prune and white pepper, then flavors of blackberry, prune and pepper. Finishes with crisp acids and soft tannins.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A selection of the best lots, Vidal’s Solar Syrah is a big step up from the regular bottling, not showing any overripeness and revealing more complexity. Subtle peppery notes kick-start the bouquet of cedar, vanilla and blackberries, while an intriguing herbal-peppery note winds through the flavors, adding nuance to the bold blueberry and raspberry mix. Creamy-textured, yet with a long, fresh, spice-tinged finish, this is a fine example of Hawkes Bay Syrah. Unfortunately, there are only 50 cases for the U.S.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Seems a bit more structured than most Marlborough Pinot Noirs, with black cherry fruit and root beer and cola notes buttressed by crisp acids and firm tannins. Give this one a couple of years to mellow before opening. Drink 2008–2012.
