Sweet nose, loaded with black plums and blackberry aromas, hints of cassis and chocolate, tar, earth, slightly salty, perfumed but also a bit hard with a hint of alcohol on the nose; ripe flavors, smooth and rich, but somewhat dull with flat flavors that don’t sing on the palate; there is plenty of fruit, there is tannin, and there are elemental flavors of coal and tar, but somehow the whole thing does not come together as it seems it should.

As expected, a deep nose defined this wine as one first approaches it with classic aromas of pepper, black fruits, cassis, and what I am always looking for in great Pomerols, the scent of salt water taffy and salt marsh; still tight and closed in the mouth, and not very giving of its flavors, but there is wonderful concentration and extraction in this wine with cranberry and quince flavors mixing with touches of tar and earth; the finish opens slightly, but it is still way too soon for this wine; there are more complex flavors at the finish with interesting hints of bitter herbs and black pepper, and a spicy texture that is almost redolent of smoked meat; like may of the great ‘82s, their initial openness and fruit has now receded into a period of introspection and brooding, while the classic elements in the wine sort out their character, hopefully soon to emerge as a new chrysalis. Wonderful nose and more evolved so it shows its character better, soft and lush with peppery aromas mixed with licorice, smoke, and loads of ripe black fruits; soft and smooth in the mouth with a classy lightness to the flavors that is both refined and classic; great flavors of fruit that are layered throughout the wine; a long smooth finish with polish and grace finish what is a wonderful example of why this vintage has emerged out of the shadows in recent years, particularly in Pomerol and St. Emilion. Sweet nose, but also salty and dusty aromas, tea leaves, iodine and spices, black pepper, tree bark and balsa wood; smooth and light in the mouth, touch of salt and spices, tea leaves, dry but laced with wonderful spicy lemony flavors, good red fruit flavors in an almost silky texture; dry in the mouth, but refined and elegant with a salty edge; lots of spicy lemony flavors at the end with a smooth but powerful grip on the palate; not your soft and sweet Pomerol. Deep and rich aromas greet the nose with lots of perfumed scents and black fruit aromas, quite intense and elegant; sweet and ripe in the mouth with an intensity not often shown in Pomerol, dry and tight still, this wine needs time; there is a deep spiciness to the flavors that should become more exotic as the wine ages; now the texture is still closed held in a tight tannic fist that is just beginning to release its grip; I would try this wine again in five years. (19+/20)

Good nose already evident in this wine, lots of black fruit and black pepper from the merlot grapes, earthen and with hints of truffles, still very closed and with the image of highly extracted small berries; ripe and full in the mouth, but still a bit clumsy and filled with baby fat; rich spongy fruit flavors, but this wine is a mouthful and as it begins to harmonize over the next few years, the flavors will knit into a powerful, deep wine. Lighter nose, as is typical of the vintage, sweet and soft and now fully evolved, pepper, smoke, a touch of leather and cedar, aromas of chalk, more austere than the other wines tasted, but aromatic and focused; sweet and round in the mouth, but with soft balanced flavors; good solid fruit flavors mixed with pepper and spices; very expressive wine and classic for the region; the wine takes on more truffle and earthen flavors at the end, and begins to lose some of the early fruit; now at its zenith, and I would not wait too long to drink it. Sweet and spicy on first nose, the aromas are exotically peppery, but also perfumed and floral with an enticing set of aromas; sweet and round in the mouth with beautifully defined acidity; like the nose suggests, the wine is spicy and peppery with hints of lemon and crabapple; long spicy finish with cranberry and quince flavors; well balanced and among the better of this vintage from the Pomerol. (18/20)

A newer style wine than some of the others tasted at this dinner, the wine opens with strong aromas of green olives, green pepper, earth, but also with sweet and smoky aromas that are richly textured; dense and rich in the mouth, the wine is showing lots of fruit at this stage with a nice fullness of texture that is quite drinkable now; there is a lot of depth, and good favors of green olives and cedar mix with the sweetness of the fruit; surprisingly approachable, and perhaps the new style of winemaking is being felt here. (18/20)
