95-97 Barrel Sample A ripe, perfumed wine with spice and sweet, delicious fruit, sustained by dense, opulent tannins and red fruits. A greater dominance of Merlot in the wine in 2006 has resulted in a richer, fatter wine than usual.

This wine is now reaching the end of its useful life, having performed well for many years; the last several bottles from my cellar are now showing their age, the nose is still sweet and spicy with strong earthen tones and hints of smoke; the wine is still sweet and has good fruit, but there is an increasing presence of tobacco and tea leaves, and there is a hint of decay setting in; the better bottles are sweet and spicy with ripe fruit; never a big wine, there is more thinning out of the flavors now, peppery and earthen with wooden flavors at the finish. Huge intense nose, dense and powerful showing huge extracted fruit, tar, black fruits, intense aromas of blueberry and blackberry, spicy, complex citrus fruit; intense in the mouth to match the nose, powerful intense fruit, concentrated and sweet with a thick but elegant structure; blueberry extract, black cherries and red cherries; smooth and rich, silky but with powerful grip on the palate; very dense but with a sophisticated air; this is an intense and big wine that almost seems to belie its Pomerol origins and place it in California; but there is a complexity and balance with a smooth mix of sweetness and citrus that takes it back to France; hard to put in words, but I like it.
