Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Full-bodied, creamy and lush in texture, this 50-50 blend of Grenache and Syrah is just right for drinking over the next few years. Black cherry fruit is touched with just enough pepper and anise to keep your interest sip after sip, gently framed by soft tannins on the finish. Great burger wine.

Part of the burgeoning Alain Jaume & Fils empire, Clos de Sixte is that family’s estate in Lirac. The 2004 typifies that vintage, offering fresh black cherry fruit on the nose and palate coupled with spice and freshness. It’s classic in style compared to the 2003; harmonious and well balanced.

A blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre, this wine has power, perfume and rich fruit. There is some tannic structure, but the sweet, rich red fruits dominate. 20% wood aging gives a touch of toast. High alcohol is noticeable. Imported by Kysela Père et Fils.

All of the Jaume wines emphasize mouthfeel and texture, and this offering is no exception. It’s full-bodied, with a creamy texture and supple tannins that highlight raspberry fruit. It’s definitely modern in execution, but satisfying rather than superficial.

Pale in color, tending toward copper, with a bright, fruit-driven bouquet of fresh limes and strawberries. Sounds promising? You bet. Then it turns a bit heavy and syrupy on the palate, picking up chalky notes on the finish. Solid, and the extracted style will appeal more to some tasters than others.

From the négociant side of the Alain Jaume & Fils operation, this is a smooth, nicely balanced cherry bomb. Wonderfully ripe, with no hard edges and a creamy mouthfeel. Satisfying for the price.

Dense and richly fruited on the nose, but not jammy or simple—there’s a healthy dose of spice to add nuance to the plum and black-cherry flavors. Ripe tannins impart a creamy texture to the midpalate, while the finish is long and fresh. Nuanced yet powerful; supple yet structured. This is top-notch stuff from a vintage that’s looking extremely promising.

Mainly Grenache, with some Syrah and Cinsault, this is a citrus- and berry-scented rosé with great appeal. Lime, strawberry and melon flavors pick up hints of chocolate on the medium-bodied palate. Develops some chalky minerality on the finish, adding grip and freshness.

Manages to combine asphalt, black olive and blueberry into a cohesive, medium-weight whole, wrapped in supple tannins. Finishes with a touch of espresso. Approachable now.
