Smoky and rather dry, with earthy aromas and burnt brown sugar on the nose. Forward and frothy in the mouth, with flavors of sweet cherries and spice. Lasting but almost cloyingly spiced on the finish, with some tired, roasted-leaf character seeping in. 90% Trepat and 10% Pinot Noir.

The Vilarnau lineup, including this rosé, is more than competent. This wine offers a fruit-basket nose followed by a full palate of cherry, raspberry and plum flavors. It has body and acidity, and ultimately an even finish that keeps the fruit character on display.

Light and clean, with dust, toast, raspberry and flowery notes to the bouquet. Fresh and properly round in the mouth, with a lot of red fruit and length. Bright, lifted and likable on the finish, with good flow. Better than most rosé Cavas.

The bouquet offers fresh lettuce leaf and apple in front of what can best be described as a clean, almost neutral brut nature. The palate has a nice feel and a subtle scour, while base flavors of lime and other citrus fruits are crisp. Only some finishing bitterness draws it down.

Gassy and eggy smelling before it settles. The palate is full and forward and maybe a bit forced, with narrow lemon and white grapefruit flavors. Snappy and citrusy, all of which is reflective of its “nature” status, but it’s also one-dimensionally citric.

Light in color and easy on the nose, with light, tropical aromas of citrus. The palate weighs out but stays fit with lime and green-fruit flavors, while the finish is tasty, fresh and doesn’t fall apart.

Tight and honest from the start, with match stick, yeast, bitter greens and apple aromas. The palate is lifted but not heavy, with firm acidity, fine carbonation and bright apple, peach and dryness to the flavor profile. Fresh, long and pure on the finish; classy given the price.

If someone says Vilarnau brut, you should say, yes, I’d love a glass. This bubbly will win you over with its dense but controlled palate and flavors of orange and sweet, ripe grapefruit. It has a bit of green to it and it draws back nicely on the tongue without overfizzing.
