Pale ruby color. Predominantly earthy savory aromas with hints of baked red fruit. Medium bodied, slightly chunky and rustic, with grippy tannins, but ample flavors of ripe red fruits and earthy minerality. Fairly long finish.

This is a great budget sipper, hitting all the bases you expect from German Riesling: bright fruit flavors of pear and pineapple combined with minerality reminiscent of stone dust. Even finishes with decent length.

Pale gold in color. Slightly sweet and candied aromas prevail: pear drops and white flowers. Similar flavors appear on the fairly light-bodied palate. This is fresh, fruity and easy to drink, but lacking any great depth or flavor intensity. A slight bitter note is noticeable on the finish.

Part of Dr. Loosen’s stable, this is a reasonably dry Riesling at a reasonable price. Petrichor and grapefruit lead the way, with hints of riper citrus fruits helping to round out the midpalate. Ends on notes of anise, crushed stone and citrus.

The Pfalz is warm enough to ripen many grape varieties, and one that is growing in popularity is Pinot Gris. This version is round in the mouth, but not terribly assertively flavored, offering up only hints of tangerine and apple before ending with a blast of citrus.

This one tries to capitalize on the trendiness of rosé and Pinot Noir but ultimately only succeeds in putting forth some vaguely melony flavors and hinting at strawberry on the sweet finish.

Silvaner’s chief attributes are its high levels of acidity, high crop yields and early maturation, which make this bottling better than average for the variety. It does have somewhat screechy acids, but there’s also some apple-like notes and vaguely citrusy flavors to go with a clean, fresh finish. Drink now.

Villa Wolf, Ernst Loosen’s Pfalz venture, had several hits in 2007, including this medium-bodied, dry Pinot Gris. Orange and tangerine notes marry easily on the palate with stony notes of crushed rock. Falls somewhere between Alsace and Italy in style and weight—an attractive combination at a realistic price.

Made in an off-dry style, the Villa Wolf 2007 Gewürz boasts classic musky aromas of lychee and spice and even develops some rose-like notes on the palate. It’s medium-bodied, finishing soft and mellow.
