Clumsy out of the starting blocks, with creamy chocolate aromas, leather and leafiness. The palate is solid and concentrated, but short on elegance and depth of flavor. What’s here is blocky and chunky, but also sort of green and flaky. Decent but with some issues, and just good on its best day. Imported by Carolina Wine Brands USA.

This new brand from Santa Carolina is improving with each passing vintage. Nimbus SB is true to its Casablanca roots; it shows oily, green aromas, a spot of bell pepper and then prickly lemon-lime flavors. It’s a good one for sushi and other seafoods, while the mouthfeel is racy and clean.

Spicy and earthy, with truffle, toast and strawberry aromas. The palate is bright and smooth, with a well-matched mix of plush fruit and juicy acidity. Three years running and this wine has been impressive since its debut in 2006. The nose is dark and sweet, maybe a touch pasty, but loaded with black fruit aromas. The palate is staunch and secure, with pronounced but proper acidity leading to bright, fresh blackberry and cassis flavors. Toasty and chocolaty on the finish, and impressive as a whole. Drink now through 2011.

This winery is part of the Santa Carolina group, and the Cefiro Chardonnay is toasted and mildly buttery and baked, with spiced apple and mild citrus flavors. The palate is basic but controlled, with a toasty, vanilla-tinged finish. Standard and familiar, but well executed.

Shows serious chops via crisp, pungent aromas of citrus and nettles. The palate is fresh, clean and citric, with flavors of passionfruit, lemon, white grapefruit and minerality. Keeps its form from start to finish. A true Casablanca SB for a good price; drink this spring and summer.

Licorice, mint leaf, black pepper and a hint of tomato define the nose, while the palate has a regular, lightly choppy feel along with flavors of olive, herbal berry fruit and pepper. Dry and smooth on the finish, with lightness and good balance. Good Merlot for the price.

A totally correct but well-priced Cab that brings pretty much everything the textbook calls for. The nose features graphite, berry and smoky wood, while the mouthfeel is spot-on and made better by ripe, toasty berry, chocolate and spice flavors. A definite winner at its price point.
