Could this be Argentina’s best wine right now? If you can find a bottle, give it a shot and decide for yourself. The aromas of mint, eucalyptus, cola and bitter chocolate are intense yet pure. The monstrous palate is overflowing with black cherry, plum and licorice, but it maintains a racy, balanced edge. The oak is heavy but not overwhelming. It’s a wonderful Malbec, a leader in its class made by Paul Hobbs of California.

Chunky, broad and slightly rubbery smelling, with baked aromas, leather and other more serious scents. The palate is full-bodied and warm, but not all that complex. Flavors of baked plums, cassis and licorice are nice, and the finish brings chocolate brownie into the game. For immediate drinking.

An opening of lightly baked black fruit aromas and graham cracker is pleasant and ready, while the palate has size, a cushioned feel and herbal, spicy berry flavors and a swatch of oak on the back end. With oak and toast on the finish, it comes to a nice conclusion. Good Malbec with some pedigree.

Young, fiery and rugged on the nose, but with exotic notes that suggest Middle Eastern and Asian herbs and spices. Like all Cobos Malbecs, this is big, chewy, brawny and a touch medicinal, with powerful dark fruit flavors, particularly black cherry, and a good deal of licorice, chocolate and overall richness. Handles its 15% alcohol better than many heavyweights; drink now through 2013.

Smells a bit heavy, oily and like dry cornflakes. The palate is straightforward, with tropical, candied flavors of mango, banana and sweet melon. Sweetness is the key here; it’s all over the palate and finish.

While I generally like and sometimes even love the Cobos wines, this Merlot underwhelms. The nose is reedy and stemmy, with earthy, herbal raspberry aromas. In the mouth, it’s scratchy and spicy, with herbal berry fruit leading to a mildly bitter finish. Better than in the past, but still a compromised wine due to its minty, green characteristics.

Green, grassy and not very appealing. There’s a can’t-miss murky, green, herbal character here that yields almost weedy fruit flavors and carob. Sweet, candied, green and just not that good for a Paul Hobbs-made wine.

This ultra extracted, inky Malbec comes from a partnership that includes Paul Hobbs, and while you cannot argue with the wine’s density, purity and power, it probably isn’t for everyone. With 14.8% alcohol, a ton of color and loads of clove-packed oak, it’s giant. Perhaps you wish it less aggressive and more approachable. Or maybe you outright love it, like we did. Regardless, it needs three years of bottle age, that or several hours of air if you plan to drink it now.

The little brother to Cobos; this wine is filled with tobacco, cedar and milk chocolate aromas and all the plum, berry, coffee and licorice flavors one might expect from excellent Malbec. The finish is tight but smooth, with a fine underlay of vanilla oak. This wine has perfect balance; it’s properly acidic yet rich, with freshness and weight but no syrupy qualities.

Potent Malbec with aromas of leather, bacon, blackberry and smoke. It’s thick and dense, but well balanced, with flavors of blackberry, cola, pepper and nutmeg. More smooth and easy than complex, with a long, creamy, sweet finish that cements the wine’s character. Probably the best Felino Malbec to date, and a good value at 20 bucks.
