The Quinta de Cachão is also used to produce Messias Port. This could almost be a Port, with its soft, juicy fruit, sweetly perfumed black-currant flavors and soft tannins. —R.V.

This is a light, fresh wine with some pleasant, soft tannins, but it is somewhat dilute. Pleasant red fruits give this wine a fresh aftertaste. —R.V.

The 172-acre Quinta do Valdoeiro is just outside Mealhada in the Bairrada region. This wine is made from the Douro grape, Touriga Nacional, rather than the local Baga. It has a dark purple color and yeasty, toasty aromas. The palate is dark and withdrawn, with powerful toast flavors and black fruits. —R.V.

A bulky, fruity wine that makes up in size and flavor what it lacks in finesse. Bold blackberry and grape flavors finish with ash and charcoal notes. Grilled burgers would be the perfect food pairing.

This low-alcohol (9%) Vinho Verde carries some obvious residual sugar, which in this case works well. Some lively upfront spritz is replaced by a respectable smoothness on the finish. And the acid structure is just right, as it keeps things tangy and lively. With a seafood salad at lunch, this would work perfectly.
