You have to look no further than this wine to appreciate how much less the 2006 vintage was than the 2005 (or 2007, for that matter). VinRoc’s ’06 is jammy and candied in blackberries and cherries, and the plaster of oak is heavy. Ready to drink now.

From a vineyard below Atlas Peak, this Cab shares the character of that mountain’s reds. It’s bone dry and very tannic and not strongly fruity, with sage-tinged flavors of black currants and cedar. Shows a structural integrity that’s increasingly rare in Napa, and suggests aging, possibly long-term. Best after 2011. Decant before then.

Color: deep pink, almost brick. Nose: strawberry jam. Palate: tart watermelon jolly rancher, sour green apple. Yum. 7.5/10
