It’s rare to get a white wine from Cabernet-centric Rutherford, but Voss does a good job with this dry, crisp, low-alcohol Sauvignon Blanc. You can taste the coolness of the vintage in the tangy acidity and the gooseberry-accented citrus, fig and white pepper flavors.

Strong grapefruit and lime, with a touch of earthiness on the nose. Flavors follow, with the addition of a chalky streak and floral notes. Lean but not aggressive mouthfeel, and a clean lime and lemon-basil finish.

Sweet passionfruit and vaguely floral aromas give way to a medium-bodied, not overly sweet palate. A solid choice on its own or with light fruit desserts.

A bit of a come-down after this winery’s outstanding 2001, but still a very good effort, with black cherry and mushroom notes intertwined with strands of coffee and earth. Finishes long, with hints of tea and black pepper.

A beautiful Sauvignon Blanc, dry and crisp and low in alcohol. With no oak to interfere, it shows vibrant citrus fruit, guava, lemongrass and mineral flavors, balanced with zesty acidity. A beautiful, racy wine.

Has a smart, snappy Sauvignon aroma of lemons and limes, apricots, figs and lusher notes of white apricots and peaches. Drinks very ripe and fruity, but fairly dry, with good minerality and acidity.

Smells almost like a dessert wine, with aromas of papayas, kiwis, peach custard, key lime pie and honey, and similar flavors. Certainly delicious, but it’s not really a dry table wine.

Starts with a woodsy, slightly fungal scent, but also waves of black cherry aromas, and those both continue through onto the palate, offering excellent complexity on the long finish. The wine is on the full side, with crisp acids and a firm structure that should see it develop well through 2015.

Fine and dry and crisp in mouthwatering acidity that brightens the lemongrass, gooseberry, vanilla and spice flavors. The tingly, secondary fermentation evident in June 2009 should settle out by Fall.

This Shiraz is peppered with such intriguing spices (hickory smoke and cinnamon on the nose, and some Moroccan spices on the palate) that we’ll overlook the fact that they’re wood-derived. The bouquet also offers lush berry fruit and a little coffee; fruit on the bouquet is a little more tart—blueberry and sour blackberry prevail. Mouthfeel is low in acid, with chewy tannins. Finish is long, with lots of toasty oak and spice. Top Value.
