With loads of fruit, soft tannins and a light weight, this is a solid Cab that’s easy to drink now. Cassis and dark black plum flavors are lifted by accents of licorice and peppery spice. Juicy and vibrant with a medium-length finish; try with steak pizzaiola or spice rubbed strip steak.

Plum, chocolate and herbaceous notes make for an attractive flavor package. A smooth mouthfeel, medium body and a long finish add further positive notes. You won’t go wrong with this one.

Earth and wood aromas open to a tart berry palate. The wine has a mildly creamy texture, but the fruit seems clipped with a slight green note. High acidity gives the wine an edgy feel and it closes a bit short, with more tart berry fruit.

This was the first Bordeaux blend from the Cape, and remains one of the very best. This 2004 is stylish, very Bordeaux in its structure, yet shows a richness of fruit that Bordeaux can only envy. Black currants, dry tannins and a sense of great ageability—they are all there.

Initially rather simple and sweet, offering ripe tropical-citrus fruit plus a round, soft feel, behind that veneer lurked an impressive wine. With time emerged Sauvignon Blanc’s brighter citrus and grass tanginess, and much higher apparent acidity. It’s full yet crisp, closing long with rich fruit and mild pepper notes. Grab now, but wait until 2005 to drink.

Enticing aromas of herb, peach and pear lead this delicious SB from centuries-old winery Warwick, whose vineyards are situated on the slopes of Stellenbosh-Simonsberg. The flavors are zesty, with more peach, pear and citrus on the palate, but the overall feel is one of poise and integration. This is a very good example of a wine in which flirty and focused elements marry successfully.

Elegant, but overly woody, with smoke and cedar aromas dominating the nose. The palate offers indistinct black fruit wrapped in dark toast that’s a bit astringent. There’s simply too much oak and not enough fruit.

The three Cape ladies are the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinotage in this tasty, accessible blend. Shows attractive dry berry fruit, tobacco and forest floor accents, and very good fruit/acid balance. Drink through 2007–8.

Offers interesting Oriental spice, leather, popcorn and earth notes over deep cassis fruit. Full and smooth, with excellent balance and an espresso-dark finish. Perhaps oak-heavy, but delicious in weight and style not unlike some very good modern-style Graves.

Opens with a lovely raspberry, chocolate and spice nose. Strong and solid, with deep fruit, a nicely balanced mouthfeel, and well-employed oak, this closes long and dry with mildly tangy tannins.
