Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smooth apple-pear and buttery, toasty aromas open to like flavors. That fruit core is offset by mild mango accents and lots of spicy oak, which continue through the long finish. For fans of rich, oaky full-bodied Chardonnay.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Both Old and New World elements are evident in this Shiraz. The round, easy mouthfeel and nose of berry, chocolate and cumin say “New World.” The palate has more Old World notes of leather, game and dry licorice surrounding the fruit core. Dark oak, licorice and tart berry flavors play out on the complex finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A fig, herb and grapefruit bouquet sets the stage. The fig element becomes a more nut-like flavor on the palate and the wine has a round, slightly viscous texture, in the full style of the other Wattle Creek whites. Finishes dry, with just a hint of tartness.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Light floral, orange blossom and peach aromas open this large-scaled white. The weighty palate shows mild orange and spice flavors. Has plenty of zip for its relative heft, and finishes long, with tangy pepper notes.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Leathery fruit and a bit of bramble or field greens mark the nose, and the earthy red-currant palate strikes a claret-like note. It’s a little lighter than the competition, and it does show some defined tartness. Drink sooner than later, and try to serve it with food.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Strong, distinctive and powerful, this Sauvignon Blanc explodes with gooseberry, lime zest, grapefruit, vanilla and wildflower flavors. It’s light-bodied and very dry, with super acidity that makes it clean and vibrant.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s tons of ripe fruit in this totally dry Cab, which has a drop of Malbec. It has a full-bodied, weighty feel, a blackberry jam density, and is fairly tannic, although the tannins are of the sweet kind. A little forward and obvious now, the wine should develop bottle complexity over the next six to eight years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
I never much cared for Bordeaux wines from this coolish appellation. Now, with this new blend of Syrah, Petite Sirah and Viognier, Wattle Creek is trying the Northern Rhône, with success. The wine shows some rustic toughness, but there’s a gorgeous core of cherry and blackberry fruit. A wine to watch.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
An unusual blend of Syrah, Viognier and Petite Sirah, this wine is bone dry and acidic, giving a cut of tartness as it washes its way across the palate. It carries flavors of red cherries, cranberries, Chinese 5 spice and sandalwood, and is fairly tannic.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The grapes come from the northern part of the valley, the warmest spot, but the first thing you notice is the acidity. It’s citrusy-juicy, and makes those flowery citrus and apple flavors taste almost like minerally Pinot Grigio. It’s an elegant Viognier, crafted for food.
