Cavas Weinert is an old-school Mendoza winery and it holds its wines longer than most, which is why this 2002 is just now a new release. Thank Weinert for the bottle age and give this wine plenty of air. What you’ll get is earth, leather, complexity, depth and ample berry fruit and chocolate. Decant for best results.

Classic Weinert wine; meaning it’s well-aged, mature and sort of throwback. It’s not purple and saturated and sticky; instead it’s medium-weight and a touch scratchy, with roasted berry aromas followed by dry cherry, raspberry and plum flavors. A touch of burnt brown sugar offers balance and sweetness, and as a whole it seems ready to drink.

Weinert has always pushed the more traditional, less extracted style. And this Bordeaux blend shows a nose of light spice, cinnamon, wet clay and subdued berry fruit. The palate is earthy, with hints of tomato, herbs, raspberry and cocoa. It’s a drying wine, with grabby tannins, but it should age well for another few years. Drink now or hold through 2011.

Leathery and reserved, with aromas of wet earth, black pepper, jalapeños and bell pepper. And while that may sound unripe to you, in the mouth the wine deals snappy red fruit and bona fide ripeness. Yes, it’s a touch tight in terms of feel, but for a real taste of old-style South American wine, this is it.

Bland and chunky, with aromas of talcum powder and apple. The palate feel is a mix of spritz and heft, and the flavors of melon and peach are pithy and lean toward bitter. Dusty and heavy on the finish, an indication that it won’t last long and has already seen better days.

Round and full, with plenty of toasty, smoky aromas to go with graphite and ripe fruit. Plenty of solid berry flavors grace the palate, and they vie with woody notes for prime billing. Vanilla, char and leather make for a solid finish. If there’s any weakness, it’s that the wine’s middle is quiet.

Heavy, with aromas of cornflakes and peach syrup. Unctuous and chunky as can be, with sweetness dialed up to the max. Finishes like a bull in a China shop, with canned pear, honey and raw sugar.

Light apple and honey aromas precede apple cider and spice flavors. Basic white wine with some juiciness. Very little depth or style, however.

Dry and bit herbal, with red-fruit aromas and a spot of green. The palate deals good red-berry flavor with accents of black pepper and vanilla. Persistent on the finish, with moderate tannic grab. Streamlined but not what you’d call thin. Imported by Broadbent Selections, Inc.
