Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From its intense, fruity flavors, it’s obvious that there is a New World influence. Michael Wenzel worked in New Zealand, California and Australia before coming back to the family winery. The spice of the grape is there, with toast and ripe fruit. Imported by Winemonger.com.

Wenzel’s least expensive sweet wine is a solid introductory effort. Light in body, it offers a distinct spice-drop set of aromas and flavors—ginger, white pepper and anise—allied to moderate sweetness. Finishes fresh, with herb and spice notes.

Very fragrant on the nose, with floral notes and peppery-spicy nuances as well as a solid backdrop of melon and apple. The flavors are almost Gewürz-like, with air freshener and rose petal notes accented by honeyed sweetness. Drink young.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This blend of Furmint and Gelber Muskateller—the traditional blend for Ruster Ausbruch—is a refreshingly delicate wine, showing delicious apricot freshness as well as the proper honeyed touch. The acidity powers through the wine, promising great aging potential as well as making it delicious to drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Apricot and orange marmalade scents presage this wine’s viscous sweetness, but the wine also boasts incredible precision and clarity to its flavors. Dried apricots, honey and citrus all come together in a complex swirl that never seems too heavy or cloying. Finishes with a hint of bergamots (the flavoring in Earl Grey tea). A blend of Furmint and Gelber Muskateller.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Does this sound old to be a current release Pinot Gris? Yes, but the quality makes it worth the wait. A rich, unctuous mouthfeel brings a cascade of stone fruit and mineral flavors, while the aromas boast hints of nectarine, pear and spice. Has a long finish, too. A real find. Imported by Winemonger.

Smells like essence of superripe peach, blended with honey and dried apricots. Peach, apricot and bergamot flavors in the mouth are sweet but not overly heavy; this wine finishes on a fresh, clean note, not a sticky-sweet one.

A Pinot Noir obviously designed for aging. The elements are there, with the fruit tannins and wood showing well over the aromatic red fruits. It is balanced, structured, firm, needing 3–4 years in bottle to be at its best.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
It’s obvious, based on the 14.5% alcohol and the wood aging, that this is no Italian-style Pinot Grigio. This is big, weighty, mouth-filling, a medley of apricot, spice and ripe pears. To counterbalance, there is a suggestion of acidity, but richness is what this wine is all about.

The style is unmistakeable, the freshness of the noble rot sweet wines of Rust gives a great burst of liveliness to the honey-drenched flavors of the baked apple fruits. It’s tempting to drink this wine now, but it should age over many years.
