WillaKenzie Estate Pinot Noir - 1997

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is the entry-level estate Pinot Noir from WillaKenzie, offering pleasing aromas of red fruits, nutmeg and shaved chocolate. The wine is still tight and edgy, with a sharp earthiness to the tannins. The fruit flavors lean towards cranberry and cherry. This will benefit from an hour in a decanter.

The Pierre Léon 2006 has more concentration and riper flavors than the 2005, with a mix of berry, herb and spice. The juicy acids and very youthful fruit flavors suggest that this wine will need a few years to reach its peak.

WillaKenzie’s Aliette Pinot Noir is a pretty, feminine wine, aromatic with baking spices and supple in the mouth. Mixed red fruits suggest wild berries—especially raspberries—and the wine has a stylish elegance through a firm, spicy finish.

Bright cranberry and pomegranate scents erupt from the glass, followed with a nicely melded mix of berry, toast and chocolate flavors. The sharp, spicy and lifted fruit flavors provide a taut through line to the wine, which then adds layers of caramel, butter and toast from aging in French oak barrels, 20% new. It’s an elegant wine, especially noteworthy at this price point.

WillaKenzie’s Aliette is a selection of estate-grown, mostly Pommard clone Pinot Noir from the winery’s oldest vineyard, planted in 1992. It’s soft and supple, with a smooth and chocolaty undercoating behind the tight, herbal red fruits. The best part of the wine is its aroma. Dense and complex, it suggests layers of brambly berry, earth and herb that have yet to appear in the actual wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Pierre Léon is a selection of different clones from the winery estate. Maybe it’s the vintage, but the wine seems dilute. The flavors of tart wild berry, earth and herb have a thin, edgy character; and the tannins seem greener than what would be optimal.

Not as rich as the Gris, the Blanc emphasizes apples over pears. The ’98 has softened up from an extra year in bottle. Creamy and perfectly ripe, it couldn’t be better for summer salads and grilled fish and poultry.

Soft and approachable, this has mixed red fruits kissed with a strong piney accent. Comes on somewhat tannic, tough and stemmy, but opens up nicely with some breathing time.
