Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
High in alcohol, bone dry, and even a little tannic, this wine has citrus and mineral flavors with an edge of candied peach and sweet cured tobacco. Oak and sur lies aging add richness, but this is still an earthy wine. Could soften and improve in a couple years.

This is the most forward and varietally representative of the winery’s current Sonoma releases. It’s a Russian River Valley classic, showing ripe cherry, cola, rhubarb and coffee flavors, with a mealy chewiness. The texture is silky, the acidity fine. It’s big and bone dry, and should benefit from a few years in the cellar.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s more acidity in this wine than most Williams Selyem Pinots. Take a sip, and the flavor of cherries explodes on the palate, along with oak. Compared to the winery’s ’03s, it seems sweet, almost cloying, on the finish.

Whoa—this is a tough, acidic baby on opening. No way you want to drink it immediately. Give it time, either by decanting or cellaring. It’s big, dry and tart, stuffed with black cherry, cola, coffee and Asian spice flavors. Best after 2007.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a big, full-bodied wine, huge in fruit, yet it has the silky elegance that Pinot needs. It’s bone dry, with adequate acidity and a young, unresolved mouthfeel. There’s a tremendous core of baked cherry pie fruit, drizzled with cinnamon and vanilla. Cellar this puppy for a couple years, or decant for up to 24 hours now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Light and elegant, this polished Pinot is for early drinking. Bone dry and crisply acidic, the wine has the silky delicacy of the variety, with cherry, raspberry, tea, rose petal, cola and woodspice flavors, and a slightly astringent finish of finely ground tannins.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Lots of true Pinot character in this dry, elegant wine, which contains mainly Russian River fruit. Made for early drinking, it has complex cherry, root beer, pomegranate, herb tea and spice flavors, wrapped into a delicately silky texture.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Similar to the winery’s ’05 Russian River bottling in the ripeness of the fruit and tannins, but somehow fresher, although it’s still a big, full-bodied Pinot Noir. Maybe it’s the acidity that makes the framboise and cherry flavors come alive. Deeper notes of Portobello mushrooms and balsamic suggest moderate aging possibilities. Drink now through 2009.

Stunning, a hugely aromatic wine bursting with lemondrop, lemon meringue pie and smoky oak aromas. It detonates in the mouth with sweet lemon custard, vanilla and pear flavors that are enormously rich, accompanied by bright acids that penetrate the nerve endings. Lasts for a long time on the finish.

Forward and delicious, a vibrant wine that’s fully drinkable now for the richness of fruit. Shows ripe waves of black and red cherries, raspberries, cola, chocolate and crème brûlée, leading to a long, sweetly spicy finish. Seems destined to be an early drinker, so best now and through 2012.
