Fragrant with peach and floral notes, the wine offers a light texture with hints of honey, herb and apricot on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With the alcohol level nearing 17%, this wine is so Porty, it’s hard to figure why Wilson didn’t just make a dessert wine. It’s sweet in chocolate, blackberry and cherry flavors.

Opens with a strong aroma of smoked meat and bacon, not bad, but indicative of brettanomyces in the winery. In the mouth are flavors of red and black cherries, with a spicy edge of clove.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Most tasters faulted this wine for various flaws, including funky aromas, medicinal flavors, and a tart, sour mouthfeel, but it’s not bad for the price. Gets better with aeration.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The blackberry and plum flavors ride next to earthier ones of tobacco and dried herbs, with strong, gritty but balanced tannins. Very dry and a bit rugged, but showing integrity. Drink with roasted meats.

The problem with this Zin is heat, as in 16.1% alcohol. While the wine is fully dry, that alcoholic burn districts from the otherwise tasty wild berry and spice flavors and smooth tannins.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Way too hot and alcoholic, almost Port-like, this is the victim of excessive alcohol (15.8%) that makes it burn like a chili pepper. It also tastes weirdly sweet, which is probably the result of the alcohol, although it may have a little residual sugar.

A nice mouthful of Zin. Bursts on the palate with ripe, jammy berry and fruit flavors, spiced with cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, white pepper, and mocha. The tannins are lush and rich. Could be drier, though, with a finish that tastes like fruit compote.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Rather underripe, with herbal aromas and flavors beside riper notes of blackberries, and dry, green tannins. There are some pretty flavors, but they drink semi-sweet, and finish short and simple.

Richness alone would earn this Zinfandel a good score, but the overall balance uplifts it. It’s simply delicious in wild berry, spice, mocha, salty bacon, vanilla toast and sandalwood flavors. Yet the tannins are fine, and the acidity is perfect. Even the slightly sweet finish and high alcohol work.
