Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Lots of rich fruit in this wine, which is riper and fuller-bodied than most Edna Valley Pinots. Seems like they left the fruit to hang for a long time in this hot vintage, resulting in blackberry and cherry flavors that are big, soft and dry. Flavorful, but lacks the silky delicacy you want in Pinot Noir.

I’m always struck by Edna Valley acids, and so it is with this tart, tightly wound Chardonnay. It’s got pretty peach and apple flavors, with a stoniness that must come from the terroir. It’s also very dry.

This has been a consistent bottling from Wolff. The ’06 shows classic Edna Valley acidity and very ripe, long hangtime fruit flavors of pineapples, Key limes, papayas and mangoes. It finishes with rich honey, but the wine is thoroughly dry.

Very dry and acidic, this elegant Chard has a tangy minerality that undergirds the lime, kiwi and mango flavors. It’s a bone-dry wine, perfect for roasted salmon, chicken or pork with a tropical fruit, green onion and cilantro salsa topping.

Fans of acidity will like this wine for its bright crispness that really gets the tastebuds whistling. It’s a very dry, streamlined wine, with citrus zest and vanilla flavors that will play well off a nice cracked crab and sourdough baguette.

Edna Valley makes coastal California’s most delicate and crisp Pinot Noirs. They tend to be food-friendly, as is this wine. Dry and elegantly silky, with high acidity and modest but complex cherry and cola flavors that will enhance, rather than dominate, your best entrées.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
I had the feeling there is seriousness of purpose behind this wine, and there’s a lot to like about it. Namely, the firm structure, including crisp acids, and plummy, spicy flavors. But there’s an awkward sweetness that detracts.

Lots of big, ripe fruity flavors in this dense wine, including peaches, pears and tropical fruits. Lees and oak are poured on lavishly, adding style and flair.

The new clone on the block finally makes it onto the front label. Soft and silky, this wine has cherry-berry flavors with an earthy streak of tobacco and sage. There are some firm tannins that kick in on the finish, which suggest six months of aging.

88 Wolff 2001 Syrah (Edna Valley); $18. A wine that takes the Northern Rhone as a model, it does share that peppery, plum and blackberry flavors, rich tannins, and full-bodied character. Has a certain one-dimensionality, but not without interest. A wine and winery to watch.
