Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A big, burly, concentrated Grenache, Yangarra’s High Sands bottling seems capable of evolving nicely over the next 3–5 years, although it is supple enough to drink now. Black cherry preserves gain structure on the finish in the form of finely dusty tannins.

This is a nutty, almondy rendition of Roussanne, almost to the extent of veiling the remaining pineapple-tinged fruit. It’s broad in the mouth and soft in texture, with a trace of warmth on the finish.

A consistent performer over the years, Yangarra’s Grenache is one of the rare examples that appears to have the stuff to improve for two or three years. Aromas are dominated by oak at this young age—cedar, vanilla and coffee—but there’s plenty of dense, plummy fruit that comes through on the palate and a firmly tannic finish that promises better things ahead. Imported by Sovereign Wine Imports.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
According to the winery, this spent only six months in neutral French oak, but there’s an indisputable toastiness to this wine, which serves to accent hints of flowers and spice on the nose. Despite the toasty nuttiness, there’s plenty of fresh fruit in evidence as well, making it quite attractive.

Sweet corn, melon and citrus flavors coat the mouth, leaving a slightly oily impression.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Yangarra is becoming synonymous with excellent wines at fair prices. Nose is a little hot at first, but later reveals pastry flour and black pepper aromas. Ripe red plums and vanilla accents unfold in the mouth. Not a huge, rich wine, but certainly a classy one.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This year’s version seems dominated by oak, with sawdust and coconut dumbing down the berry flavors. There’s a brush of tannin and gripping acidity on the medium finish alongside just a touch of raspberry flavor. Give it a year or two in the cellar for better integration.

The old-vine designation will make more sense when you see how black and extracted the wine appears in the glass. Aromas are abyss-deep, with dust and black soil over dark fruit. The palate holds nothing but the purest blackberry, dressed up with some toast. Finishes with taut cherry. A solid, masculine wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Addictively tasty, and a good approchable size, this wine is a good mix of red berry, earth and a hint of burnt sugar. Finessed; finishes with a warming amaretto note. Not sure how long it would go in the cellar, but there's no time like the present, if it is so pleasing now.

Cadenzia is a term the McLaren Vale producers have agreed to use on their top Grenache-based blends; in this instance it’s 47% Grenache, 41% Shiraz and only 12% Mourvèdre. Like Yangarra’s other wines, this one is heavily extracted, with dark flavors of chocolate, cassis and coffee. There’s intense fruit, backed by firm structure and some spice; hold 1–2 years, then drink it over the next 5–8. Imported by Sovereign Wine Imports.
