Doesn’t taste like much of anything else out of Australia, and that’s a good thing. Smells like smoke and pencil shavings, with wood dominating the palate in the form of tree bark or bramble. Has a bit of a citrusy tang midpalate, its plum fruit finally coming through on the finish. An oddball now, but will likely have a few surprises in store in 3–6 years.

This is a little slow out of the gate, starting off with some rather cabbage-like aromas. Over time, the odors evolve toward smoke and ash, and, finally, into a complex, cedary aroma. The flavors of this medium-bodied blend (80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec, 8% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot) feature blackberry and cassis, but also fold in hints of smoked meat and vanilla before finishing crisp and long. This really evolves and improves in the glass, suggesting 10-plus years of potential longevity.

Australia’s original Shiraz-Viognier features cracked pepper aromas, along with hints of blueberries and licorice. Raspberries take over on the palate, buoyed by a rich, creamy mouthfeel and ample spice.

Hmmm…tough to know what to make of this one. One bottle seemed excellent, with vibrant lifted floral notes and ripe black cherries. Another was barely good, with stewed fruit and a touch of volatility. The rating is an average of the two—hope you get the better version.

This wine is dominated for the moment by an intensely smoky character. There’s plummy fruit and supple tannins underneath, so maybe this rating will ultimately appear harsh, but an ashy note on the finish may never properly resolve.

Folks who enjoy herbal complexities in their Cabernet shouldn’t pass this wine up. Aromas of roasted peppers, eucalyptus and cassis verge on vegetal, but the flavors are more refined, layering rich chocolaty notes over cassis and hints of green pepper. It’s only medium-bodied, but still packs in plenty of intensity, evidenced on the long, silky finish. Drink now–2020.

The 2005s are the last vintage released before the passing of Yarra Yering founder Dr. Bailey Carrodus, and the Underhill is a star, delivering blueberry, spice and vanilla flavors aboard a rich, creamy mouthfeel. At 15% alcohol, a touch of warmth does creep in on the finish.

Shiraz complexity in a glass: herbal, smoky and meaty, all tied together by a core of berryish fruit. This is classic cool-climate Shiraz, combining concentration and flavor intensity with medium body and barely perceptible tannins. It’s elegant and nuanced, never rich or heavy, with a long finish. Drink now-2025.

A Yarra Valley classic, Dry Red No. 1 is a Bordeaux-style blend marked by its restrained alcohol levels yet potent flavors. The 2007 features scents of tobacco, vanilla and cassis, with a hint of tomato emerging on the palate. It’s medium-bodied, with a long finish that finishes with firm but silky tannins and lip-smacking cassis. Approachable now, but should age well for 10–15 years.

This wine’s aromas and flavors amount to an inconsistent mix of superripe (chocolate and prune) notes with those that are less so (herbal, tart raspberry) at first, but it does seem to settle down with some time in the glass, becoming more integrated but staying rather crisp on the finish. Drink 2013–2020.
