Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Opens with earthy aromas of crushed spices and herbs, and a streak of peaches and citrus. In the mouth, it’s overtly sweet, with lemonade flavors although crisp acidity makes it drink bright and lively. —S.H.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A Mendocino wine with all five major Bordeaux varietals. Nonetheless Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, with blackcurrant and cassis notes and elaborate but not excessive wood. Very dry, this wine has higher acids than you get in Napa, meaning it’s not as plush. But it’s more food-friendly.

Dry and tart in acidity, with an almost sparkling liveliness that may calm down by the time you read this. The flavors are simple, of pineapple, orange and apricot fruit juice.

Dry and fruity and a little rugged, this wine from Mendocino County has ripe cherry-berry flavors that are tinged with some sharp tannins, and a tart, astringent finish. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
An interesting wine that combines cassis and blackcurrant notes with a rich earthiness suggesting sage and tobacco. This limpid, soft wine is easy to drink. It’s filled with summery berry flavors and mild, complex tannins and is nicely dry. Yet it has an elusive elegance that makes it special.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
How good this dark young wine smells! Cassis and blackberry aromas have subtle hints of butter, smoke and vanilla, with broader notes of olives and chocolate. In the mouth the subtlety and delicacy fall apart, with the palate assaulted by oversized fruit and rude acidity. I wish it were more balanced.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Inky-purple in color, with deep aromas of plums, violets, earth and a touch of smoked meat. Tastes very extracted and jammy, with dark stone fruit flavors, although it’s quite dry. Tannins are evident but not a problem. A well-made example of this variety, which is usually lost into blends. —S.H.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s a note on the nose that suggests dried hay or cardboard, although airing reveals better aromas of berries and chocolate. The flavors are thin and a little weedy, with suggestions of black cherries. Give the benefit of the doubt to the winemaker. He struggled with a poor vintage. —S.H.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
An eccentric wine, bordering on the bizarre, although it has some nice elements. Starts with aromas of cotton candy and raspberry fruit tart, and drinks extracted and jammy, with raspberry-red cherry flavors. High acids and dusty tannins make for a rough mouthfeel. —S.H.
