This is a balanced, not over-rich Condrieu, with enticing cookedwood flavors. The big attraction, a result partly of the fresh 2000 vintage, is its refreshing acidity, which cuts through the weight and richness and makes it very drinkable.

Cuilleron’s use of wood is subtle, leaving just a hint of caramel on this smooth, opulent wine. It is rich, fat and full-bodied, with flavors more of apricots and white fruits. There’s a light touch of acidity, but spices and ripe fruits dominate.

An earthy wine, which has flavors of walnuts and spice, with a hint of ripe fruits, but more of herbs. At this stage, the wine hasn’t yet struck a balance between the wood and other flavors.

A bright, modern, deep purple color immediately shows the approach with this wine. The brightness continues to the aromas of red berry fruits and new wood. To taste, it is dominated by sweet new-wood flavors, but has also some deep blackcurrant fruit and big, firm, perfumed tannins. Give it five years and it will be delicious.

Honeyed orange aromas easily handle the oak that’s been placed over them. On the palate, this is a rich, round wine that fills the mouth without being heavy, ending with a lengthy flourish of toasty oak. Drink now–2008.

Yves Cuilleron’s style is not aimed at blockbuster levels of extract. The 2004 L’Amarybelle exemplifies his balanced approach, yielding ample blackberries and spice couched in a medium-weight wine that is very supple, elegant and persistent. Drink now–2012.

The ever increasing range of Yves Cuilleron’s wines includes a number of single parcel wines, especially from his Saint-Joseph holdings. This wine, from the Lombard vineyard, is typically rich and opulent, packed with spice and ripe fruits. It is full-bodied, and at this young stage still dominated by toast and wood flavors.
