What a value! This rosé is a blend of at least six Southern Rhône grapes, including Syrah and Mourvèdre. Pretty onion-skin color. Displays lively apricot and peach aromas. Very fruity and rich, with some complexity. Dry and refreshing, a versatile wine for dinners or just sipping slightly chilled. Best Buy.

This block selection has been terrific in recent years, and the ’03 is right up there in wicked deliciousness. It’s softly tannic, cushioning the mouth with blackberry, blueberry, coffee, cola, chocolate and pepper flavors that last for a long time on the finish. Drink now–2009.

Intensely concentrated, this wine is almost black. The aroma is all about pepper, but there’s also plenty of blackberry, dark chocolate and oak. Rich, fat and full-bodied, with considerable tannins. —S.H.

Fruit and wildflowers jump at you in a fragrant cloud reminiscent of honey, lemon, kafir lime, clove, and other undefined baking spices. Served well chilled, this will make for a fine summer wine—it’s a blast of liquid sunshine. Citrusy and long in the finish, with pleasant notes of melon and sweet butter.

A beautiful wine. If more Syrahs were like this, especially at this price, more people would buy them. It’s dry and smoothly tannic, with rich flavors of blackberries, bacon, chocolate and peppery spices. Try as an alternative to Zaca Mesa’s much more expensive single vineyard and reserve Syrahs. It’s almost as good.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Profoundly rich, offering massive blackberry, currant, chocolate, bacon and spice flavors that are liberally oaked. A fine structure provides needed balance, with strong, finely ground tannins and brisk acidity cleansing the palate. Young now, and should develop for the next six years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Zaca Mesa once again brings their deft touch to this hard-to-control variety. A bit more structured and leaner than previous vintages, the wine is dry and complex, with refreshing acidity framing flavors of tropical fruit chutney, honeysuckle, vanilla and cinnamon spice.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Over the years this Rhône blend, based on Mourvédre, Grenache and Syrah, has been an excellent value, and the ’05 is one of the best yet. Rich and soft, it’s packed with opulent cherry and blackberry pie filling, cassis, red currant, licorice, pepper and smoke flavors, with a creamy, chocolaty taste throughout. Yet the wine is totally dry and balanced.
