Homegrown zin is catching on in Washington, and this captures the style nicely. Claret-like, with bright berries and juniper spice highlight a taut, fresh, tangy wine.

Unusual mix includes Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Counoise. Forward, ripe aromas of berries, cherries and plums atop layers of tobacco and malted chocolate. Soft and accessible, but somewhat shapeless.

The Serience is round and fruity, with sweet strawberry jam flavors front and center. This shows its 14.6% alcohol with a bit of burn in the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This unusual wine mixes Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Counoise and Cinsault—not gonna find that in California! It’s got a great spicy edge to it, along with chocolatey tannins and acids that suggest a lick of grapefruit—the Washington Syrah signature. It’s a very appealing red blend, great for tossing into any party mix, unpretentious, rich and flavorful.

The blend is 60% Viognier and 40% Roussanne; the wine is a rich golden color, with an equally rich and fruity mouthfeel. Flavors include lots of golden apple, hints of peach and light tropical. This is well-balanced, seamless and shows medium concentration.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is the first Tempranillo from Zefina (just 60 cases made) from vines planted at the Alder Ridge vineyard in 1999. It is soft, fruity and dark, with some pretty spice showing in the nose. There are attractive floral notes, sweet herbs and a mix of light red fruits to follow. The tannins are soft and the acids are well under control, leading into a lightly chocolaty finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Lightly spicy and displaying a brambly character, with fruit flavors of strawberry jelly, this high alcohol (over 15%) Zin includes some high-toned, volatile notes. It is trending toward an Amador County Zinfandel style, though it is not quite that hot or volatile. All in all, it’s a good effort.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Serience Red is a southern Rhône blend of 42% Grenache, 35% Syrah, 11% Mourvèdre, 7% Cinsault and 5% Counoise. Though a new release, it comes out nicely aged, benefiting from some extra time in bottle. The flavors are round and fruity, and the wine has a sweet core of ripe red berries, baking spices and light herbs. The only disappointment is the finish, which tails off rather quickly.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This 50/50 Viognier/Roussanne blend brings sharp, crisp, acid-driven flavors to your mouth. It’s a confident mix of pineapple, tropical fruit, melon and citrus with a sharp tang to the finish. Though it feels a little hot when sipped alone, it’s got the stuffing to be an intriguing accompaniment to certain foods, such as spicy Asian shellfish and seafood.

Quite ripe, roasted and lush; this is Zinfandel at its most full and rich, to the point of tasting like a confectionary dessert. If you like flavors of cooked berries, powdered sugar and baking spices, this is the wine for you.
