The GSM's (grenache, syrah, mourvedre) that we featured at the Around Australia in 80 Sips event series this month were some of my favorites- particularly by Torbreck. Spice, dimension, without too much jam or pow.

Eric Ross Winery Tempranillo - 2009

Tasted on: 1/30/09 Appearance: clear and medium-deep with a purple-ruby color. Nose: pale-medium with aromas of spicy cinnamon, sour cherry, black pepper, and hints of creaminess. Palate: somewhat dry with low acid, medium tannins, and flavors of black cherry, cloves, tobacco, and an interesting tire component. The length is medium. Overall: a very easy-drinking wine. The 05’ date has allowed it to drink even easier. It’s relatively complex with a good body and average finish. The price is just right for this wine. This wine seems quite flexible for not just meat-based dishes, but with certain white-wine type meals as well. I give this an 88.

appearance: medium-deep with a ruby color and average intensity. nose: clean nose, below-average intensity, and aromas of spicy cinnamon, sour cherry, black pepper, and hints of creaminess. this wine must have been oaked. palate: relatively dry, with low acid and medium tannins, and flavors of black cherry, cloves, tobacco, and a strange tire component. the length is medium. overall: a very easy-drinking wine. the 05' date has allowed it to drink even easier. relative complexity with a good body and average finish. the price is just right for this wine. this wine seems quite flexible for not just meat-based dishes, but with certain white-wine type meals as well. i give this an 88.

Red Bicyclette Syrah - 2005

appearance: kind of murky, with above-average intensity. nose: light-medium, with aromas of red cherries, blackberries, red candies, and a hint of clove. palate: relatively dry with medium acid and tannins, with floral flavors, rose, raspberry, cinnamon, and plum. overall: pretty one-dimensional with it's flavor profile of red/blackberries. the finish is smooth, and the tannin/acid balance is nice. this wine simply packs no excitement in both the nose and flavor profile, and it's just bland. i give it an 84.

Tierra Brisa Malbec - 2007

appearance: medium intensity with an above-average color, purple. nose: light intensity with aromas of cloves, dirty socks, blackberries, black pepper, and cough medicine. palate: off-dry, with low acid and tannins, and flavors of plum, vanilla, gooseberry, leather, shoes. the length is short. overall: a basic wine that is quite balanced with the acid and tannins. the heat is containted quite well. the problem is just that it's simple and basic, it's not that interesting. for the price, it's acceptable. i give this an 83.

Talus Merlot - 2005

0 out of 0 people thought this note was helpful.

appearance: medium intensity, with a lemony color. nose: very pronounced, with armoas of gooseberry, freshly cut grass, honey, lemon, and white flowers. palate: off-dry, with average acidity and body, with flavors of straw, melon, hints of mango, and peaches for days. the length is average as well. overall: a very crisp chardonnay. excellent nose, very aromatic, and complex. nice acidity as well, and the body is decent with a nice finish. this reminds me very much of their sauvignon blanc, although i think the s.b. is a bit better with more acidity and a bigger attack. still a good wine. i give it an 87.
