Adventures in Wine
Where did you grow up?
My great grandparents are from India and they migrated to the Fiji Islands around 1900 as indentured laborers. My grandparents and parents were born in Fiji. I was born in Monterey, California shortly after my parents permanently relocated to the US in 1975.
What was the first time you remember drinking wine?
My parents were never big wine drinkers but my mother would serve wine for special occasions since she thought it was classier than the Scotch they normally drank. The wine was pink and it came in a large jug. I was intrigued by the pink color as it reminded me of strawberry Fanta so I took a sip expecting something fruity and sweet and I was immediately turned off by the sour flavor. Not a good first memory but funny.
When did you start to like wine?
When I was 19, I started waiting tables at fancy fine dining restaurant in Monterey. They had an exceptional wine list and a great wine training program for the staff. Once I started to learn about the nuances of what makes a wine taste a certain way, I really began to appreciate the flavor, the whole tradition, culture and history behind wine.
