Debut of film, “My Week with Marilyn,” coincides with wine’s 25th anniversary

marilynmonroe. This Friday, director Simon Curtis’ much anticipated “My Week with Marilyn” hits theaters. The film stars Oscar-nominated actress Michelle Williams as the 1950s sex symbol and is based on the week in 1956 that British writer Colin Clark worked as Monroe’s assistant.

In honor of the film’s debut, we suggest uncorking a bottle of Marilyn Merlot, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The rich, seductive 2009 Napa Valley merlot comes in a silk-screened bottle featuring Monroe’s silver signature.

The wine dates from the early 1980s, when home winemakers Bob and Donna Holder decided to turn their passion for merlot into a commercial enterprise. A friend came up with the clever name, and, ever since, the blond bombshell has inspired new wines and a new vintage every year.

There’s the 2010 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blonde which, according to the producers, exhibits a “distinct combination of ripe grapefruit and pineapple.” Cabernet sauvignon lovers might try the 2004 Red Dress, a limited production proprietary blend with “aromas of mature black fruit and exotic spices.” With its structure and boldness, the wine could become a classic, like its namesake.
