Opening Ceremonies
Sip your way into the 2012 Olympics

2012olympicsToday, the Games of the 30th Olympiad kick off in London. You would be forgiven if you wondered what in the world the Olympics had to do with wine. Well, there is a wine for every occasion, and we’ve put together a guide for what to sip throughout the opening ceremonies.

Receiving the Queen of England. The Queen’s favorite wine is thought to be NEGRU DE PURCARI from Moldova (amazingly enough). Indeed, it’s referred to as the “Queen of England’s wine” because she consistently orders the 1990 vintage. This wine can be hard to find, so instead sip EAGLE CREST VINEYARDS Queen of the Vine NV (Finger Lakes, New York) $8 in honor of Her Majesty, available here.

Lighting the Torch. Hearken back to the Olympics’ origin in Ancient Greece with a Greek wine. Try a PROTOPAPAS Syrah 2007 (Macedonia, Greece) $15, available here. This is an exotic syrah with smoky aromas and a spicy flavor, perfect to capture the power of the eternal flame.

Paul McCartney Performance. Sir Paul hoped his future wife would get him a bottle of wine in “When I’m Sixty-Four,” but what would he want? Paul was always the most sweet and sentimental Beatle, so how about closing out the opening night with a DOMAINE STE. MICHELLE Brut non-vintage (Columbia Valley, Washington) $9, a sparkling wine with a hint of sweetness as well as apple and citrus flavors. Available here.
