Malibu Barbie, Malibu Beaches, And Malibu…Wine?
A winery for the beach set
Malibu Family Wines at Saddlerock Ranch is a winery tucked away in a most unlikely place. Two families teamed up to create it: the Semlers and the DeJorias. And while it’s a traditional winery in most ways, it’s also very Tinseltown. It’s got valet parking; it’s very talked about by those in-the-know, and while it’s chill, going there feels chic and trendy (just like going to Malibu).
The winery produces wines under both the Semler and Saddlebrook labels. Two worth trying:
SEMLER Viognier 2010 (Saddle Rock, Malibu) $20
This is a subtle, but floral white. It’s great as an appetizer on its own or with sashimi and a salad.
SEMLER Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 (Saddle Rock, Malibu) $20
This is a good hot-weather red. It’s on the lighter side for a cab, with hints of smoke, and red and black fruit. This wine is a half bottle only.
The Semler vineyard is nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains, about 25 miles from Santa Monica. It produces eight varietals. Bring a blanket and a picnic basket and join the crowds enjoying the ocean air. The ranch is home to horses and exotic animals, so you’re as likely to see a zebra as a celebrity.
