Lungarotti Run by Two Generations of Women

Lungarotti Run by Two Generations of Women
Two sisters and their mother carry on a great wine tradition

wine_04Italy is a nation rich in history and tradition, especially in winemaking. That’s why when we heard about a trio of woman at the helm of an historic winery in the Torgiano region of Umbria in central Italy, we thought it worth sharing.

Meet the Lungarotti women: Chiara, her sister Teresa, and their mother Maria Grazia. The threesome carry on the traditions established by the late Giorgio, their father and husband. Together, these women bring a special mix to their wine business. The younger generation brings an entrepreneurial spirit, while their mother has a solid understanding of history, keeping the team firmly planted in its culture.

The winery produces many varietals, but there are two of note at opposite ends of the price spectrum. Both are made mostly with sangiovese.

RUBESCO Rosso de Torgiano DOC 2008 (Umbria, Italy) $12

RUBESCO Riserva Vigna Monticchio DOCG 2005 (Umbria, Italy) $42

If you are in the area, the winery is a destination to add to your itinerary. There’s a wine and olive oil museum on site and a luxury spa. Once you’re there, why ever leave?
