What to eat, drink and do in Paso Robles, California.
Napa and Sonoma may get most of the attention from tourists--and being a short drive from San Francisco certainly helps. But if you're able to travel a bit farther and are in the mood for a wine-country experience that's every bit as relaxing and beautiful, visit Paso Robles, home to approximately 200 wineries.
Any trip to Paso should start out at Turley Wine Cellars--especially if you love massively delicious zinfandels. At Turley you can taste many small production examples that designated by their vineyards, as well as buy bottles primarily available only through the mailing list.
Your second stop should be at Tablas Creek Vineyard, which specializes in red and white Rhône varietals including, grenache, grenache blanc, syrah, mourvèdre and roussanne...to name a few. While many of California's Rhône Rangers are in Paso Robles, Tablas Creek is truly among the best. And if, after your tasting, you're inspired to start your own vineyard, you can buy a few baby vines right in the tasting room.
When you've had enough wine, sit outside in the afternoon sun with a beer at craft brewer Firestone Walker. You can even try a special brew that's blended with the help of the local winemakers.
