Our Favorite Wines This Month
New wine suggestions for you to try

wineMay has proven to be a sensational month. The roses (and rosés) were in full bloom, Team Bottlenotes travelled to the Windy City for our Around the World in 80 Sips event series, and we ended the month with a weekend full of Memorial Day parties. We are excited to share some of the delicious sipping that took place this past month.

Abigail
BLACKBIRD VINEYARDS “Arriviste” Rosé 2011 (Oak Knoll District, Napa Valley, CA) $25
afpI shared this bottle of wine with my four best friends from high school. It  was a spectacularly sunny day and this rosé was clean with bright acidity. It had strawberry aromas and red cherry and blueberry flavors. I can’t think of a better pairing for an afternoon of laughter and sipping. Find it here.

Alyssa
CONTINUUM Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 (Oakville, CA) $162
ajr-new-headshot_100x100This was a lovely and fragrant bouquet of blueberries, blackberries, and red currants--one that naturally evolved into a velvety wine with dark berry flavors. Find it here.

Andy
L’AVENTURE Estate Rosé 2010 (Paso Robles, CA) $25
aa-headshot_100x100With the weather warming up, I’ve been drinking more rosés lately. I sat out on my patio on a glorious afternoon following a Giants win with a bottle and some cheese, and I almost took the whole thing down by myself it was so good. L’Aventure is mostly known for its excellent Rhone-style reds, and this primarily syrah-based rosé is full of the strawberry and rhubarb notes that I love, with a nice touch of acidity on the finish. Find it here.

Anthony
PARDUCCI "Small Lot Blend" Sauvignon Blanc 2010 (Mendocino County, CA) $11
anthonyFor the price it would be hard to find a better wine. This sauvignon blanc has very pleasant citrus and tropical aromas. Not only is it full of flavor, but it leaves a great after taste as well. I recommend pairing this with a salad to start a dinner. All in all, it's a great bang for your buck. Find it here.

Leta
GUMPHOF Südtiroler Vernatsch 2010 (Alto Adige, Italy) $18
leta-photo_100x100This is one of those unknown Italian gems that makes wine exploration in Italy simultaneously awesome and frustrating . It’s a really delicious wine, but it can be difficult to track down. The hunt is worth it, however. I randomly grabbed this bottle off the shelf at a tiny, impeccably curated shop called Windsor Wines. I was on the way to dinner with a former roommate in Prospect Park. Needless to say, the bottle looked weird and I didn’t recognize the variety, so I was all about it. It’s made from the red grape vernatsch, also known as schiava. With a light body but full flavor, this bottle was perfect with a few pizzas we grabbed after accidently burning our salmon steaks and asparagus on the grill. Throw it in the fridge for 10 minutes on an especially warm evening and this red will sing in your mouth. Find it here.

Sam- MBA INTERN
MCKENZIE-MUELLER "Napa Jazz" Red Wine 2006 (Napa Valley, CA) $20
samIf you know someone that loves music, buy this wine for them as a gift – just make sure you’re around when they open it. I bought this bottle last year for Father's Day because of the artwork. Now normally, I wouldn't push a bottle of wine because of the label; but it grabbed me (the label features a bass clarinet, which I later learned was illustrated by the family winery's youngest daughter). When I tried the wine, however, I was impressed by its structure and quality. Napa Jazz is a solid Bordeaux blend with a pleasant aroma and it’s packed with flavor. At $20, it’s a great buy. Find it here.
