A Magnificent March
Our team’s favorite wines this month
The Bottlenotes team is back from Spring Break and ready for action: our noses are freckled, our beach bods are tanned, and we are eager to share our favorite wines from this past month.
Charles Smith Wines “Eve” Chardonnay 2010 (Columbia Valley, WA) $13. The first time I tasted this chardonnay was in Chicago at one of my friends’ and families’ favorite local eateries, Southport Grocery and Café. My mom and I talked about this wine for ages. Not only did we find it tasty (it’s delicious with a buttery cheese melt sandwich), but it’s affordable too. Needless to say, when I saw it in my local grocery in California, I nabbed it (lucky me, because it was the last one on the shelf!). Its affordability and hints of guava, pear, and minerals have made it my standard go-to bottle. You can find it here.
Dos Cabezas “Red” 2009 (Cochise County, AZ) $24. This wine has lovely flavors of cranberry, blackberry, and black licorice that dominate this wine. It was delightful to enjoy in its native Arizona while I was visiting friends and family in Phoenix for Spring Training! You can find it here.
Caliza Winery “Pink” 2010 (Paso Robles, CA) $23. I tasted this delicious, tiny production rosé by Caliza, named for the Spanish word for limestone, at the winery tasting room in Paso Robles. It's pink (surprise) with a slight copper color because they let the wine soak on its skins for just three days. I found it to be relatively full-bodied for a rosé. It's filled with fresh strawberry notes and has a nice touch of acidity. They call it a "hot tub" wine at the winery, and I can certainly see why. Tapeña Rosé, Spain, 2010 (Tierra de Castilla, Spain) $10. The first day of spring wasn’t officially until last week, but in San Francisco we had the pleasure of enjoying beautiful weather very early in March. I popped this gorgeous rosé after a long afternoon of playing frisbee at Ocean Beach on a sun-drenched Saturday afternoon. This Spanish thirst quencher is made from monastrell (aka mourvèdre), garnacha (aka grenache), and shiraz grapes. It is juicy, packed with ripe red berry flavors, and absolute perfection to sip while the sun sets. Maui’s Winery at Ulupalakua Ranch “Maui Blanc” Pineapple Wine nonvintage (Maui, HI) $13. I first discovered this wine after taking one of the quizzes on our home page and have been excited to try this pineapple wine ever since. So when my husband and I took our honeymoon recently on the island of Kauai, I just had to conduct a taste test. I am a lover of fruity wines so I had a hunch I would love this, and I do! It has a not-too-sweet but totally delicious pineapple flavor that would be amazing with Thai and of Pan-Asian food! You can find it here.
