George Taber’s A Toast to Bargain Wines

George Taber’s A Toast to Bargain Wines
"Judgment of Paris” author uncorks the truth about affordable wine

bargainwinesWe didn’t need award-winning author George Taber to tell us what we’ve known for years: Ten bucks will get you a tasty bottle of wine.

What we do learn from Taber’s new book, A Toast to Bargain Wines (Scribner, 2011, $15) is how the industry achieved its bargain-based glory. It involves the California creators of a certain $2 wine and a yellow critter from Australia.

Taber, who penned Judgment of Paris and To Cork or Not to Cork, explains how new technology such as night harvesting and the refrigerated shipment of grapes has helped the quality of inexpensive wines increase. He also predicts the next giant in the bargain bin. Hint: It may be called “One Buck Chang.”

Best of all, Taber recommends 400 wines under $10 and categorizes them by brand, varietal, and geographic area. Consider your wine possibilities exponentially expanded.

I loved Taber's other wine books...this one is definitely on my list.

The French poet Colette once said, "I was a girl when I met this prince; aroused, imperious, treacherous, as all great seducers are," about which white wine?
