The soil of Bancroft Ranch,at 1800 feet on the Western slope of Howell Mountain, which is gritty white tuff of volcanic origin, is shallow and well-drained. It yields intensely flavored berries with powerful concentrated fruit flavors and thick skins that yield rich tannins.
