Cantine dei Marchesini DOCG Sangiovese - 2008
March 21, 2010
Trying to figure out where the heck this winery is located almost proved to be next to impossible; however, one thing's for sure, it's definitely a Tuscan. Anyway, the important fact here is that it's a DOCG Chianti, meaning it's a quality made wine, at least by Italian standards. DOCG is the pinnacle standard in Italy. If you try this wine, remember that Chianti is supposed to be light, earthy, and made to drink young. I came across a couple of reviews which seemed to imply that there was too much mineral, thus an iron aftertaste, and only after letting it aerate awhile did it become drinkable. The reviews were from 2009, so they were probably refering to the 2006-07 vintages. I had the 2008. I let it sit for about 45 minutes. I found the aroma to be quite nice: light red fruits, earth, herb; and the flavor nearly matched its bouquet. There was a hint of mineral, but I thought it only added to the nice flavor of the wine; my opinion of course, but for $10, it was worth drinking. This wine is made to be consumed with lighter foods such as a roasted chicken, heavier fish, and pasta with marinara. If you want a bolder Chianti, you should try a Classico, or Riserva.
