Chateau Montelena was founded in 1882 by Alfred Tubbs, a prominent California businessman. The renaissance of the winery, under the leadership of James Barrett, began in 1972 with the replanting of the Estate vineyard and the establishment of the Chateau Montelena philosophy: make the best, period. Today the tradition continues. Jim Barrett’s son, Bo, is Master Winemaker, having assumed all winemaking duties in 1982. Exceptional wine can be made only with exceptional grapes, which is why we adhere to the Estate concept of “winegrowing.” After more than two decades of experience with the same vineyards and varietals, the Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Napa Valley Chardonnay are recognized as world-class.

Tasting Note

Aromas of orange blossom, citrus rind, and stone fruits of white peach and apricot open the bouquet. Layers of tropical pineapple and starf... (more...)ruit then give way to toasted hazelnuts and a touch of smoke, while the depths of the nose reveal a yeasty minerality. On the palate the clean, soft, full, entry builds with layers of tropical fruit, white melon, green apple, and citrus. Excellent weight and acid balance throughout are followed up by a bright refreshing finish reminiscent of limeade on a hot summer day. Subtle notes of oak spice and vanilla linger at the end of the exceptionally long finish.

Funny your review of this popped up. I just recently
saw Bottle Shock and was left thinking, "I have to get
a bottle of that Chardonnay."
