Winery Story

Chateau Montelena was founded in 1882 by Alfred Tubbs, a prominent California businessman. The renaissance of the winery, under the leadership of James Barrett, began in 1972 with the replanting of the Estate vineyard and the establishment of the Chateau Montelena philosophy: make the best, period. Today the tradition continues. Jim Barrett’s son, Bo, is Master Winemaker, having assumed all winemaking duties in 1982. Exceptional wine can be made only with exceptional grapes, which is why we adhere to the Estate concept of “winegrowing.” After more than two decades of experience with the same vineyards and varietals, the Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Napa Valley Chardonnay are recognized as world-class.

Tasting Note

This Zinfandel has a very pleasing, bright, clean ruby color. The nose is loaded with interest, from tobacco and cedar-spice box to classi... (more...)c Zinfandel briar-berry and bright strawberry on top. With a soft entry, the palate builds to a big, jammy mid-palate rich with barrel spice, clean tart blackberry, and velvety tannins throughout. Sweet vanilla notes lead into a smooth, ripe berry finish with hints of passion fruit.

This red wine Zinfandel has notes of spice,blackberry,and finishes with tannins.Ithas sweet vanilla notes as well that lead to a smooth ripe berry with hints of what appears to be passionfruit-like.This wine was actually a suprise with it's taste,and the combination of notes in it made for a wonderful wine that most would be suprised about.It has a bright ruby color to it also.Overall,it's a winner.
