Winery Story

Chateau Montelena was founded in 1882 by Alfred Tubbs, a prominent California businessman. The renaissance of the winery, under the leadership of James Barrett, began in 1972 with the replanting of the Estate vineyard and the establishment of the Chateau Montelena philosophy: make the best, period. Today the tradition continues. Jim Barrett’s son, Bo, is Master Winemaker, having assumed all winemaking duties in 1982. Exceptional wine can be made only with exceptional grapes, which is why we adhere to the Estate concept of “winegrowing.” After more than two decades of experience with the same vineyards and varietals, the Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Napa Valley Chardonnay are recognized as world-class.

Tasting Note

Brilliantly clear in the glass with a pale golden straw color, this wine opens with big aromas of honeysuckle and pear along with a chalky m... (more...)inerality, classic Riesling spice, citron, apricot, and a slight nuttiness. Soft and round on the palate with a fleshy entry, it shows exemplary persistence and fantastic weight throughout. Rich flavors of honey, apricot, and tropical passion fruit flood the mid-palate, followed by a crisp lime note on the finish, and tailing into sweet toasted spice.

Pale yellow. Semi-sweet taste with a fruity/pear after taste. Delicious and perfect combination of dryness and sweetness.

Leave it to Chateau Montelena to convert a non-riesling fan in one glass. Crisp and not overly sweet, this riesling delights with grapefruit notes.
