Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
This is a spectacular wine, and certainly much above what this property is known for; very elegant nose, refined citrus aromas, fresh and much younger than its age, spicy nose with herbs, chocolate, black pepper and complex aromas that intertwine beautifully; same in the mouth, elegant and refined; the fruit is presented with a light, sophisticated touch; not too much sweetness, not too little; lots of citrus fruit flavors signaling a different style of production than later vintages that have become more fruit-laden and sweet; this has perfect balance and well represented, but contained, dry elegant tannins. (19/20) A second bottle served at the Commanderie’s Dinner Committee meeting was not as fresh and showed its age; there was a lot of old-vine sweetness left , but it was definitely drying out, and had seen better days.

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
This bottle may have been somewhat imperfect as the cork, although extracted smoothly and intact, was black and greasy; deep sweet aromas, rich fruit, black cherries, blackberries, raspberries, but also dense and somewhat monolithic; pretty much the same in the mouth, big and sweet but somewhat vague on the palate; there is a jammy sweet quality to this wine, but it lacks verve; tastes tired and lacks definition; the wine seems to have very low acidity which accounts for its somewhat boring nature; sweet, thick finish; pleasurable but not memorable. (14.5/20)
