Feiler-Artinger Muscat-Ottonel Spätlese - 2003(W-140)

Feiler-Artinger Muscat-Ottonel Spätlese
Full, Lush Floral, Aromatic Sweet

Winery Story

The Feiler-Artinger winery was established in the Austrian town of Rust in the early 1900s by Gustav and Karoline Feiler. After the second w... (more...)orld war, they were the first to restart the tradition of harvesting grapes afflicted with noble rot for the production of Ausbruch. Ausbruch is the wine style that Rust if famous for today. Traditionally, this sweet wine was made by adding juice from freshly picked grapes to that of grapes concentrated by noble rot. In 1955 Gustav's son Hans took the reins and steered things well, and since 1994 the third generation, in the form of Hans' eldest son Kurt, has stepped into line. Their work has not gone unnoticed; in 1999 Hans and Kurt were jointly declared “Late Harvest Wine Makers of the Year."

I absolutely love Muscat- and this "Spätlese" is probably one of my top three favorite whites in the Bottlenotes portfolio. Truly floral on the nose, with a bouquet of lilacs and lillies, this Muscat evolves into a honeyed nectar without being syrupy. Perfect pairing for spicy food- wonderful contrast.

I was expecting to get that bitter bite I usually get from white wines, but it never came! My wife loved it too, and that's all that matters... Fruity and smooth it was. Wine came via the Explorers's club.

It was a little too sweet for me. I do enjoy dessert wines that are sweet, but for some reason I wasn't able to adjust to the sweetness of this wine.

An interesting wine, but I must say it was fruitier than I generally care for.

Unsubstantial, extremely sweet white with little flavor or aftertaste; reminiscent of sugar water. Sadly absent of personality and bouquet that can make Vouvrays or Rieslings so fulfilling.
