Winery Story
Named for the peaceful, hardworking natives that inhabited the Cuyo territory before the arrival of Europeans and founded in 2002, Bodegas y Viñedos Huarpe is a young winery that draws upon the vast experience of its founders, three fourth-generation descendants of the Piedmont, Italy native Pasquale Toso (of Toso sparkling wine fame). In charge of winemaking is Italian and German-trained winemaker José Hernandez Toso, chief winemaker of Luigi Bosca, while Alejandro Toso, former agricultural engineer of Pasquale Toso, manages the vineyard. José Hernandez Toso was named 2005 Winemaker of the Year by a voting group made up of other Argentine winemakers. The winery is based on old family vineyards that Toso planted in Barrancas, and some of their vineyards are almost 90 years old. The Barrancas district of Maipú, located at the foot of the Andes Mountains in Mendoza’s “Primary Region”, is uniquely suited for the production of high-quality wines.
Tasting Note
This delicious red is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Malbec (85-year old vines), so it has the muscle and structure of a Cabernet and the fruity meat of a Malbec. It is only made in exceptional years and in limited quantities.
