Marcassin Gauer Vineyard, Upper Barn Alexander Valley Chardonnay

Tasting Note

Although Helen Turley has consulted as a winemaker for some of the top United States wineries, it is her own boutique winery, Marcassin, tha... (more...)t receives the largest share of her attention. Located in the Russian River Valley, the tiny winery has no plans to expand, since Helen, and her husband, John, prefer their present size. Marcassin, which translates as "young wild boar" in French, plants its ten acres with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The simple philosophy that dictates Turley's winemaking reigns at Marcassin as well: great vineyards, meticulously farmed, limited yield, long hang time and natural yeast. The results speak for themselves.Although Helen Turley has consulted as a winemaker for some of the top United States wineries, it is her own boutique winery, Marcassin, that receives the largest share of her attention. This wine has a tightly focused nose with sweet and elegant aromas, complex with a touch of smoke and minerals, honey, and floral. Overall, it is several steps above the pack.

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Very tightly focused nose with sweet and elegant aromas, complex with a touch of smoke and minerals, honey, floral; sweet and rich on first taste with a “California” ripeness to the grapes, but then that recedes, and the wine exhibits much better balance and complexity; elements of earth and steel mix with nicely focused lemon acidity; long, complex finish with spices and minerals; this is several steps above the pack.
