Seghesio Family Vineyard Old Vines Sonoma Valley - 2000

Seghesio Family Vineyard Old Vines Sonoma Valley

Tasting Note

Seghesio has been a family owned and operated winery since 1895, after founder Edoardo Seghesio emigrated from Italy to California. Based in... (more...) Healdsburg, the carefully managed vineyards produce Zinfandel in a variety of terroirs. The vineyard also produces small amounts of Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Arneis, Barbera, and Sangiovese. This is one of the real quality zinfandels produced in California, and is made from selected batches of the oldest vines from the property, the youngest of which is at least 50 years old; powerful and concentrated, intense aromas of black plums, black cherries, blueberries, black pepper, and a hint of chocolate; sweet and powerful in the mouth, this wine really packs a punch, but is focused and elegant; the wine is a finely-tuned machine of dry tannins, citrus fruit flavors mixed with spices and earth; actually quite austere and has no hint of the California sweetness that ruins so many of these wines; long, dry tannic finish; this wine needs several more years to show its full potential.
